Being A Nipper

Nippers is about learning new skills, gaining confidence and having fun in a safe beach environment. For Nippers, the beach is the classroom. They gain confidence by passing the 'tests' of swimming, board paddling, beach sprinting, dolphin-diving, spotting a rip, having fun with new friends and discovering things about themselves.

The skills gained at Nippers will stick to the soul like sand from the beach and be carried for life.

Nippers is a junior activities program that introduces children aged 5 to 13 to surf lifesaving. It is a fun outdoors activity that develops a child’s confidence, teaches valuable life skills and safety knowledge. Most surf life saving clubs offer a Nippers program, even though the size and style of the activity may vary from club to club.

The youth of today are the future of Surf Life Saving and the Nippers pathway teaches lessons and skills which allow young people to continue in lifesaving and sport as they grow older.

But it’s not all hard work. We like to call it serious fun! Nippers is a great way for children to make friends, be active and enjoy the beach in a safe environment.

Great results on the weekend at the Illawarra Branch Championship held at Sandon Point Beach.

Congratulations to Ava Rushton on being names Surf Life Saving Illawarra Female Junior Lifesaver of the Year. Ava will now be heading of the the Junior Development Camp, where the winner of the NSW Junior Lifesaver of the Year will be announced. Gemma Gallagher was also a finalist in the competition....Well done to Gemma and Ava, a great way to finish your time at Nippers.

The club won a bunch of medals including a 3rd place in the March Past.

It was also great to see so many kids in water events again, our "Water Skills" program is really giving our nippers the confidence to hit the water.

Looking forward to seeing everyone competing at State.

Great results from the Seagulls at the SLSNSW - Age Championships at Blacksmiths Beach on the weekend of 3 - 5 March 2017.

Even though the contingent that headed up the coast were small they were might in voice and enthusiasm.

2 very good results with 2 Bronze Medals.

  • Jack Bridges finishing up his nippers career with a Bronze in the U/14 Male Beach Flags
  • Maddi Agnew continued her personal haul of medals with a Bronze in the U/12 Female Beach Sprint

A big surprise was the clubs All Age Beach Relay Team making it into the final on the final day of competition, a great effort from Indiana McDonald (U/9), Ben Agnew (U/10), Jessica Dornjak (U/11), Maddi Agnew (U/12), Ava Rushton (U/13) and Jack Bridges (U/14).

Other competitors having a run at the carnival were Gracey Bridges (U/11), Mia Corliss (U/12), Abby Bailey (U/12), Sabine Rogers (U/12) and Lachlan McDonald (U/14).

A big thankyou to our ever reliable beach official Carl Williams, who drove up and back twice to make sure the club had officials on the beach.

An even bigger thankyou to the parents, family and friends who supported our competitors in some less than perfect conditions.

Junior Preliminary Evaluations

Many activities that will be completed by children as part of junior activities will be conducted in the water. To ensure that all children have a suitable swimming ability to allow them to participate in these activities, SLSA has developed a Junior Preliminary Evaluation for each age group. Every junior member is required to participate in this evaluation prior to any water-based activities being undertaken.

Note: It is not an assessment which if not completed competently precludes the child from becoming a member or continuing with junior surf education or training activities – see information below.

The Club Executive may nominate suitably qualified members to act as their delegate for the purpose of assessing skills maintenance activities. Delegates should be selected on the basis of expertise in the awards being assessed, and the delegates names must be minuted at a Club Executive meeting annually.

A member who is delegated to assess junior preliminary evaluations must:

  • Be proficient in SRC (at minimum) and have an understanding at the requirements of the evaluations for juniors
  • Be familiar with the process of reasonable adjustment
  • Adhere to the program of skills maintenance requested by the club
  • Complete any paperwork required accurately and return in a timely manner

For more information please see the ‘Skills Maintenance Information’ document available in the members section of the SLSNSW website: www.surflifesaving.com.au/members

Conducting the evaluation

This evaluation should be conducted in a low-risk environment, as determined by a completion of a preactivity risk assessment. All new junior members should be supported by a 1:1 water safety ratio (water safety personnel: Activity Participant) when completing their evaluation. For all returning junior members, where knowledge of their ability is known by the club, a 1:5 water safety ratio (water safety personnel: Activity Participants) may be used (Refer to SLSA Policy and Procedure 1.1 Water Safety (http://www.surflifesaving.com.au/members/resources/administration)

Following The Evaluation

Any child that does not meet the required evaluation level will require a higher level of supervision when involved in water based activities. It is a requirement that these children remain in shallow water and based on a 1:1 ratio until the child is deemed competent in relation to the preliminary evaluation guidelines.

Any child that does complete the preliminary skills evaluation competently can progress to water based junior activities noting 1:5 water safety ratio (water safety personnel: activity participants). For still water / pool activities or low-risk conditions (ascertained after a formal risk assessment) the ratio may be expanded to 1:10 water safety ratio (water safety personnel: activity participants) as per SLS Policy and Procedure 1.1 Water Safety(http://www.surflifesaving.com.au/members/resources/administration)

Junior Competition

Junior competition evaluations

From the age of 7 (Under 8) juniors can begin to compete in intra-club, inter-club and branch competition. From the age of 8 (Under 9) juniors can also participate in state competition. To ensure that all junior members that wish to compete in any inter-club, branch, state and national events/championships have the ability, strength and fitness standard to complete the courses they must be able to complete the junior competition evaluation for their age group.

Junior Evaluations can be completed on the SLSNSW Proficiency Test Work Card. The card for the 2016/17 season is green. Please contact your club Chief Training Officer if you do not have a copy of this card.

Branch and state competition requirements

Any competitor wishing to compete at carnivals (water or beach events) must have successfully completed:

  • Junior Preliminary Evaluation
  • Junior Competition Evaluation
  • Appropriate Surf Education award for their age group by 31 December 2016

Procedure - Board Allocation for Carnivals (Seagulls)

To enable us to ensure that all board competitors have a board assigned to them, we have created a new system in which boards will be allocated.

Chris Reilly has offered to be Carnival Board Co-ordinator.

This is how the new system will work:

  • All Competitors who wish to do a Board Event are to inform their Age Manager the week before the next carnival this way we can ensure that there enough boards available.
  • Boards to be picked up by Competitors from trailer around 8am.
  • Children/Parents are responsible for their Boards for the entire Carnival, pickup and return.
  • If nippers find they have time to do water and are not listed as doing a Board Event, they must gain permission to use the boards, either from Chris Reilly or the child allocated to that board. It must also be returned to either Chris Reilly or the child that was allocated to that board.
