During the off-season when the RED+YELLOW FLAGS are no longer up and the Council Lifeguards + Surf Life Savers are taking a break, it's important to take some basic precautions to ensure your safety until the flags are back up on 26 September 2025.

  • Practice the 'Think Line' approach: Take a moment before entering the water. Spend a few minutes observing your surroundings, evaluating the wave pattern, checking for rips, and determining if you're prepared for a swim.
  • Never swim alone: Without others nearby, there won't be anyone to sound the alarm in case of an emergency.
  • If you get caught in a rip current, try to remain calm and allow it to carry you. Resisting will only exhaust you. Remember, it won't drag you underwater or transport you to another country. Generally, the current will eventually return you to shore or a sandbank. If not, swim parallel to the beach until you can use the waves to guide you back to safety.
  • If you see someone in trouble, CALL 000 AND ASK FOR "POLICE" before assessing your ability to assist. If you're confident in your capability, never enter the water without a flotation device. Whether it's a surfboard, a boogie board, or even an esky lid, having something to help both you and the person in need stay afloat can provide crucial time to help remain calm and plan the next steps.
  • During the winter months, our Emergency Callout Team remains on standby, #rescueready. However, launching into action may require additional time. We encourage everyone to focus on their safety and the safety of others. Please, take precautions and ensure everyone remains safe.
