On a sunny January afternoon in 1952, a young Evan Griffiths pulled himself onto the sands of Stanwell Park Beach and earned his Bronze Medallion. It marked the beginning of over three decades of distinguished service to the Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club and the broader Illawarra surf life saving movement.

In his early years, Evan was a familiar sight along the beach—serving as a vigilant patrol member standing watch over the breakers and a keen competitor in local and inter-club carnivals. But while many lifesavers found their calling strictly in the surf, Evan’s true legacy took shape on the sand, where the next generation was learning the ropes.

Recognizing that the juvenile movement—affectionately known as the "Seagulls"—was the vital heartbeat of the club, Evan spent nearly every summer afternoon down at the beach. He tirelessly trained kids in March Past, Rescue & Resuscitation (R&R), and fundamental surf skills, ensuring a smooth transition into senior ranks. His dedicated coaching yielded remarkable success, leading R&R teams at Stanwell Park, Thirroul, and across the Illawarra Branch.

Beyond coaching, Evan took on immense administrative and officiating responsibilities. From club Treasurer and Vice President to Superintendent of the Illawarra Branch J.S.L.S.A., his expertise spanned all levels of the organization. After passing his Panel Judges Examination in 1971/72 alongside his brother Bob, Evan built an incredible officiating record: judging or refereeing at every single Illawarra Carnival for 14 straight years and serving 15 years as an official at the State Championships.

"Evan has been a tireless worker with the juveniles with our Club and at branch level. The juveniles is the nursery for our Bronzed Life Savers, and if the juveniles were to fold, I feel the senior club would have trouble maintaining the healthy active membership which we now enjoy."
