Joining Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club as an Associate Member in September 1977, Harley Dreghorn rapidly became the administrative cornerstone and guiding light of the club for more than two decades.

Over a monumental 16 years as Club Secretary and 7 years as Club Treasurer, Harley provided unmatched organizational leadership and financial stewardship. He managed every facet of executive governance during crucial periods of operational expansion, constitutional reform, and modern infrastructure development.

Harley’s vision and tenacity were central to securing the club’s modern facilities. Serving eight years on the Building Committee, he led critical deputations to Wollongong City Council and the NSW State Government, drove brick-sponsorship fundraising campaigns, and ultimately project-managed the construction of the new clubhouse through to its official opening in 1987.

Beyond executive governance, Harley was a master fundraiser and community builder. From coordinating 15 years of ANZAC Day Two-Up events at the Helensburgh Workers Club to fostering the integration of the Seagulls junior movement into the senior body, securing the club’s liquor license, publishing the first community annual report, and serving as Illawarra Branch Treasurer, Harley’s selfless service left an indelible mark on the club and surf life saving movement.
