Joining the Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club in the 1969/70 season as a 13-year-old junior activity member, Graham "Cookie" Cook embarked on a lifelong journey of service on the beach. After winning the 13-year-old point score and progressing through cadet ranks, Graham earned his Instructor's Certificate in February 1974 and his Advanced Resuscitation Certificate in February 1975, establishing himself as a pillar of patrol operations and candidate education.
Over a distinguished career spanning 20 active patrol seasons—including an incredible 15 seasons with 100% patrol attendance—Graham was a cornerstone of lifesaving standards at Stanwell Park. He stepped into executive leadership as Chief Instructor in 1975/76 and Vice Captain for two seasons, before serving three consecutive terms as Club Captain from 1978/79 to 1980/81. His leadership ensured tight patrol discipline, leading multiple winning Patrol Cup teams and conducting squad training that brought dozens of new Bronze Medallions and Qualifying Certificates to the club.
Beyond patrol leadership, Graham's versatile contributions touched every area of club life. He served six years on the Building Committee during the crucial clubhouse construction era, held positions as Boat Captain, IRB Vice Captain, First Aid Officer, and Gear Steward, and competed at branch level—winning the Illawarra Branch Championship as a member of the Open Boat Crew in 1980/81. He also represented the club at branch level as District Supervisor and as a member of the Board of Life Saving Control.
In later years, as his children joined the "Seagulls" junior movement, Graham continued giving back as a Surf Ed Instructor, Gear Steward, and Seagulls committee member. On July 6, 1999, following a formal nomination by Debra and Ron McCormack, the Life Membership Committee unanimously recommended Graham Cook for elevation to Life Membership of Helensburgh-Stanwell Park SLSC.

"A special thanks to Cookie for the great job he did as Vice Captain. He was so keen that he even did the work of other people... The Club owes a real debt of thanks for the hours given to training the boys."
