Mark Ryan joined Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club prior to 1972, embarking on an extraordinary career in surf lifesaving that spans nearly three decades of frontline service and technical innovation. After obtaining his Bronze Medallion in 1972 and his Instructor's Certificate in February 1974, Mark quickly established himself as a hands-on leader both on patrol and in power craft rescue operations.
Mark's defining legacy at Stanwell Park is inextricably linked to the introduction and expansion of Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs). Stepping in as the club's second IRB Captain in the 1981/82 season, Mark held the position for an unmatched 17 consecutive seasons. Over nearly two decades at the helm of power craft operations, he personally trained dozens of drivers, crew members, and Bronze Medallion squads, establishing Stanwell Park as a benchmark club for water safety and motor maintenance.
In addition to his IRB leadership, Mark was a cornerstone of general beach operations and surf sports. He served as Boat Captain and Vice Boat Captain during the 1970s, acted as Gear Steward for ten seasons, and led patrols as Patrol Captain across six seasons—leading his teams to victory in four Patrol Cup competitions. His exceptional dedication on the beach earned him 100% patrol attendance and the prestigious Patrol Member of the Year award for 1987/88.
Beyond the local beach, Mark represented the club at regional level as the Illawarra Branch Power Craft Supervisor, District Supervisor, Board of Life Saving Control member, and Branch IRB Examiner. Following a formal nomination by Geoff Wood and Harley Dreghorn on May 25, 2000, the Life Membership Committee unanimously recommended Mark Ryan for elevation to Life Membership on June 7, 2000, honoring over 28 years of dedicated service.

"Mark has been an enthusiastic and hard working member for the Club for quite some time. His involvement and expertise with the I.R.B. is second to none. He was our second I.R.B. captain, a position he held for something like 12 to 16 years consecutive... I think Mark's record speaks for itself."
